The Government has budgeted for 60% of the Fund’s target to be met by sequestering carbon in soils, yet experts say it has dramatically overestimated the potential for soil carbon storage and underestimated the cost of doing so. Anyway, land carbon storage (in forests as well as soils) is impermanent and no substitute for urgently phasing out fossil fuel CO2 emissions which will stay in the atmosphere for millennia.
